Duck Donuts sets opening date for first Louisville location

Duck Donuts, a new-to-market doughnut franchise, has set a date to open its first Louisville location.

The popular, made-to-order cake doughnut concept will open at 4600 Shelbyville Road on Saturday, Feb. 20. The St. Matthews shop is owned by Louisville Donuts LLC, a local franchise owned by Jeff Penn.

The Louisville store opening marks the 100th operational doughnut shop for the emerging franchise company. Russ DiGilio, founder and CEO of Duck Donuts, launched the brand in 2007 in the town of Duck in the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

DiGilio will join the Louisville team for a special ribbon-cutting ceremony at the store on the Friday before its opening date, according to a news release.

“Our family-owned donut shop has come a long way in 14 years and we’re excited to celebrate the 100-store milestone with our newest owner in Louisville,” DiGilio said in the release.

As I previously reported, Penn has purchased options to open additional Duck Donuts locations in the surrounding area, but nothing specific is planned yet.

The 1,275 square-foot retail store in Shelbyville Road Plaza reflects the franchise’s beach theme and family-friendly atmosphere, with a few indoor seats and two outdoor tables for warmer weather, the release continued.

Duck’s vanilla cake doughnuts can be customized with a coating, such as powdered sugar or chocolate icing, and toppings including rainbow and chocolate sprinkles, graham cracker, chopped peanuts, chopped bacon, shredded coconut and Oreos. Then, guests can finish it off with a drizzle of hot fudge, marshmallow, salted caramel or raspberry.

In addition to doughnuts, the Louisville location will serve Duck Donuts’ signature coffee blends — Riptide Roast, Light House Blend and Sunset Pier Decaf — espresso, donut breakfast sandwiches, donut sundaes, as well as new menu items including frozen beverages and milkshakes.

Duck Donuts will be open from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Crumbl Cookies, a gourmet cookie delivery and takeout chain, is set to open in Louisville in early March.

The Louisville Crumbl will be located at 12949 Shelbyville Road in Middletown. A free cookie day is planned on the day of the store’s grand opening. It’s located in a retail center that includes a Feeders Supply.

The national chain based in Utah counts more than 150 locations in nearly 30 states, but this will be the first Kentucky location, according to Crmbl’s website.

“We’re excited to bring Crumbl to Louisville and hope the local residents love these cookies as much as we do,” Jason McGowan, Crumbl co-founder and CEO said in a news release. “We love the traditional flavors, but also like to surprise our customers with new, fun flavors. My personal favorite is the raspberry cheesecake cookie.”

Louisville Crumbl is owned locally by Claire and Jake Tidmore and Chelsie Larson. Claire Tidmore is a Louisville native and senior vice president at Doe-Anderson, and Jake Tidmore is a local real estate professional.

Larson recently moved back to the U.S. after spending seven years in Saudi Arabia with her family to join in opening and operating Crumbl.

Crumbl will be open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to midnight each Friday and Saturday. Group catering is also available for weddings, birthday parties or office events.
