Crumbl Cookies, a gourmet cookie delivery and takeout chain, is set to open in Louisville in early March.

The Louisville Crumbl will be located at 12949 Shelbyville Road in Middletown. A free cookie day is planned on the day of the store’s grand opening. It’s located in a retail center that includes a Feeders Supply.

The national chain based in Utah counts more than 150 locations in nearly 30 states, but this will be the first Kentucky location, according to Crmbl’s website.

“We’re excited to bring Crumbl to Louisville and hope the local residents love these cookies as much as we do,” Jason McGowan, Crumbl co-founder and CEO said in a news release. “We love the traditional flavors, but also like to surprise our customers with new, fun flavors. My personal favorite is the raspberry cheesecake cookie.”

Louisville Crumbl is owned locally by Claire and Jake Tidmore and Chelsie Larson. Claire Tidmore is a Louisville native and senior vice president at Doe-Anderson, and Jake Tidmore is a local real estate professional.

Larson recently moved back to the U.S. after spending seven years in Saudi Arabia with her family to join in opening and operating Crumbl.

Crumbl will be open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to midnight each Friday and Saturday. Group catering is also available for weddings, birthday parties or office events.

Fans of cake doughnuts, get ready. Duck Donuts is coming to Louisville.

The first area location is set to open at 4600 Shelbyville Road in Louisville, according to the brand’s website and recently launched Facebook page. There is no projected opening date listed.

Duck Donuts first opened in Duck, North Carolina in 2007. The concept serves fresh, made-to-order mini vanilla cake donuts which are then customized with a variety of toppings.

Donuts can be served bare or coated in cinnamon sugar, powdered sugar, glaze, icing and more; topped with sprinkles, peanuts, chopped bacon, shredded coconut or Oreo; and drizzled with hot fudge, marshmallow, salted caramel or raspberry drizzle.

The opening marks the brand’s entrance into Kentucky. The closest locations are in Dayton, Ohio, Mason, Ohio, and Knoxville, Tennessee.

Look inside Buff City Soap’s new store in St. Matthews

A fast-growing retail concept is opening its first store in Louisville this week.

Buff City Soap, a handmade soap and skincare brand, is opening a St. Matthews location on Thursday, Oct. 22. The new store, near Trader Joe’s within Shelbyville Road Plaza follows the opening of two other Buff City Soap locations in Jeffersonville, Indiana, and Elizabethtown, Kentucky.

Manager Sharon Dickens told me that they got the keys to the former F45 fitness studio on Oct. 5 and the 2,400-square-foot space has been transformed into a scent-lover’s paradise. You can see photos of the space in the attached gallery.

Dickens was formerly the manager of the Jeffersonville location prior to joining the team in St. Matthews.

“I’ve always been kind of a product junkie,” Dickens said, noting that she has previously worked for a skincare company and also CafePress. “I have a background in this direct, on-site production retail, because at [CafePress] we would print the products on mugs and T-shirts, box them and deliver them. It’s a similar feel to running that sort of production.”

Dickens said it was a bit of a challenge at first while opening the Jeffersonville location in August, as many people have never heard of Buff City Soap before. After building brand awareness, she said customers quickly took to the customizable, natural soap concept.

All Buff City Soap stores offer more than 30 unique and customizable scents across dozens of handcrafted soap products; including the brand’s soap bars, bath bombs, foaming hand soap and laundry soap. The brand’s products are crafted by local artisans at in-store “makeries,” which allow guests to customize the scent and ingredients used in the process to create a unique scent profile.

Each day, Buff City Soap’s makery is producing about 20 loaves of soap and each long loaf is cut into 15 bars, resulting in 300 new bars of soap a day, Dickens continued. She said the cherry almond scent has been especially popular in Jeffersonville, but each location has their own favorites, which ultimately dictates how much they make of specific scents.

“Our customers love how transparent our soap-making process is,” said Rick Kueber, franchise owner of Louisville Soap LLC, in a news release. “When they walk into our stores, they are able to select the different ingredients and scents they want in their soap products, and they are comforted by the customization that they can experience. It’s something completely unique to Buff City Soap.”

I talked with Kueber back in July about his plans to open at least 150 Buff City Soap locations within the next five years. His franchise group has signed two different development deals — one for Kentucky, Indiana and Tennessee and the other for neighboring western regions.

In addition to the St. Matthews, Jeffersonville and E-town locations, there’s a fourth Buff City Soap store set to open next month at NuLu Marketplace on Market Street.

The St. Matthews store currently has 23 employees, Dickens said, and it is still hiring for part-time, full-time and seasonal positions.

Buff City Soap–St. Matthews is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday. The first 50 people in the new store on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday this week will win free soap for a year, and Buff City Soap is offering a 20% off deal.

EXCLUSIVE: $81 million apartment development proposed near Ballard High School

Louisville’s Hagan Properties Inc. is ready to tackle one of its most ambitious projects to date.

The local real estate development firm on Monday unveiled plans for the 520-unit Providence Point apartments. The $81 million project has been proposed on 19 acres Hagan Properties has owned for years at 2020 Herr Lane near Ballard High School in Louisville’s East End.

The complex will house a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom units in multiple buildings on the site. The apartments, which will feature upscale amenities such as designer cabinetry and quartz countertops, will be joined by community amenities, including a fitness center, dog parks and green space.

“In addition, with the changes that Covid is bringing to the industry, Providence Point will have touchless access elevators, UV filtered HVAC systems in common areas, flexible ‘We Work’ style space and many indoor flex areas in the clubhouse for residents to use as some people shift to working more from home, but still need a ‘third place’ for escape from the home office,” Hagan Properties President Wendy Hagan said by email.

Hagan Properties will handle the development, leasing and property management for the complex while HCC, a majority female-owned contracting company led by Wendy Hagan, will serve as the general contractor. Charlotte, North Carolina.-based Axiom Architecture will handle the design.

“We have been waiting for a number of years for the timing to be right to start on this project. While there are many new communities under construction, we believe that Providence Point offers a unique location and great community amenities such as shopping, dining and access to schools,” Hagan said by email.

Projected lease rates and a full development timeline have not yet been disclosed.

Hagan Properties said several developers had unsuccessfully tried to rezone this land before it stepped forward.

A prior proposed development called for 175,000 square feet of retail and office space and hundreds of condos, but the financial downturn of 2008 and the cost of offsite improvements made that project nonviable, the company said.

As part of its proposal, Hagan Properties is planning to complete $5 million to $6 million worth of offsite improvements to public infrastructure, and the company will pursue industrial revenue bonds to pay for those upgrades. Proposed work includes construction of a regional basin to serve 88 acres of the area’s watershed, signalization improvements and a new traffic signal and road improvements to Herr Lane, including the installation of an additional lane from Wesboro Road to the new traffic signal.

“This storied property will satisfy this area’s demand for apartments for many years to come and the road improvements we are making will significantly aid in alleviating the gridlock that Ballard High School experiences during peak hours,” Layson Hagan, a multifamily developer with Hagan Properties, said by email.

Hagan Properties has a number of other major projects in the works locally.

The firm is finishing up the 470-unit Victory Knoll apartment complex on the East End near Southeast Christian Church, which has been estimated to cost $68 million. Hagan Properties also built the 356-unit 9910 Sawyer Apartments, a sprawling upscale apartment complex that backs up to E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park.

And the firm is investing about $48 million into a 344-unit apartment complex on 19 acres at 8000 and 8006 Cedar Creek Road. About 90% of that complex will feature one and two-bedroom units while the remaining 10% will be three-bedroom units.

Meanwhile, the firm is slated to break ground later this year on The Station @ Middletown, a new apartment complex with more than 300 units near the Middletown Station shopping center, which it owns. That project is expected to cost nearly $50 million.

Hagan Properties also owns the Shelbyville Road Plaza and Taylorhurst shopping centers in Louisville.

Louisville’s Hagan Properties creates new leadership position

July 30, 2020 By Hagan Properties

A well-known Louisville real estate developer has brought an old colleague back into the fold in a new position.

Hagan Properties Inc. has named Bob Pettit its new director of construction. In that role, Pettit will provide general supervision of construction-related multifamily projects and oversee various aspects of construction activity, from budgeting and cost analysis to scheduling, logistics and delivery.

“My return to Hagan Properties is a great fit for me and an opportunity to allow me to do what I love,” Pettit said in a statement.

Tommy Edwards, a principal with Hagan Properties, said Pettit’s focus on high-quality multifamily projects will make him a strong asset for Hagan Properties as the firm has several apartment projects in the pipeline.

“Bringing a talent like Bob back was imperative for Hagan Properties’ growth. In the last 10 years, he has been involved in 15+ multi-family projects, and given our company’s current and future developments, the need for a person of his caliber has never been greater,” Edwards said.

Pettit previously worked for Hagan Properties in a similar role from 2004 to 2011, assisting in the construction of apartments and several shopping centers, Edwards said. He had been a project manager with The Weber Group in Sellersburg, Indiana since late 2013 before taking on this new role.
